Gain Experience and Learn from Mistakes

197 ideas were submitted this year for the inventor competition “Creative Minds”. Now only 26 projects remain at the opening event in the Sparkasse, Bad Mergentheim on 9th January 2014, the event which kicks off the implementation stage. The young inventors now have four months to build a prototype. Five projects will be implemented by the students together with BARTEC experts. One of those projects is “snow shovel” by Moritz Brunner. The 12-year-old noticed that when you are clearing snow, you have to do it twice: once to move it and once to scatter it. He wants to build a snow shovel that will do both simultaneously. Our experts Stefan Beckett and Wilhelm Ruck meet him while he is building his prototype.

“I did not expect to get to the final round of the competition with my idea,” Moritz says enthusiastically at the first meeting of his project with the BARTEC experts. “When I had the idea for the snow shovel, I took the drawing board of my dad, because I wanted to see how it might look,” says Moritz. He’s always been happy in the workshop and the year seven student was supported by his technology teacher in his efforts to submit this project to the inventors’ competition.

On the basis of his self-made sketch Moritz was allowed to present his project to BARTEC again and the experts made suggestions for improvements. Up until the jury session, they will meet regularly and work together on the snow shovel. The 12-year-old had opted for BARTEC at the opening event because the experts presented themselves well and were interested in the project of the secondary school student. “I had a good gut feeling and the BARTEC experts took me and my idea seriously,” says Moritz. His tasks for the next meeting: research material sourcing and produce a revised sketch.

Thus an exciting time lies ahead for the participants until they present their ideas and their implementation before the jury on 17th May 2014. Ten days later, on 27th May 2014 the prizes for the projects will be presented at the award ceremony in the Wandelhalle, Bad Mergentheim.
